Groundwater management in general has a water quality component as well as dependent surface water ecosystems. In California, the Department of Water Resources is currently reviewing the Groundwater Sustainability Plans from the Sustainable Ground Water Management Act (SGMA) for high priority basins. It is unclear how the water quality component will be evaluated or how the Groundwater Sustainability Agencies will regulated water quality (on top of the other regulatory requirements already in place). As water (and groundwater) becomes an even more critical resource agencies are increasing their oversight with ramifications for companies who use, discharge, and ultimately depend on groundwater supplies. This talk will explore what is currently being done via regulatory agencies under SGMA.
